Policy and Advocacy Summit 2008

WPHCA’s annual Policy and Advocacy Summit was held February 13 and 14 at the Concourse Hotel in Madison, with attendees hearing presentations from Jason Helgerson, the state’s Medicaid Director, as well as from high-profile health care industry professionals who shared their thoughts on the current and future state of health care reform. Some of Wisconsin’s most successful Health Center advocates also revealed how easy and important it is to reach out to staff and board members in order to develop a grassroots network inside your Health Center. Attendee reviews showed that each speaker did a great job of intertwining personal thoughts with specific organizational stances and goals.Participant advocates were also emboldened by the feedback and support given by the majority of the legislators and staff they met with on Day 2 of the summit.  It is obvious that through consistent message delivery, backed up with a mix of analytical data and personal success stories, Health Center advocates can fulfill our main 2007-08 legislative policy goals.

The goal of this year’s Summit was to share with first-time attendees what they need to know to get involved, and provide veteran attendees the news and information they need to return to their respective communities and once again excel at grassroots advocacy. Day One’s highlight was WPHCA’s first-ever awards ceremony, where those Health Centers, individual advocates and legislators who most helped WPHCA achieve our 2007 policy goals were honored for their work. Day Two culminated in Capitol visits, where dozens of grassroots advocates engaged their local legislators by sharing personal stories, as well as WPHCA’s 2008 Policy Agenda.Documents from the Summit
